Our Mission

The Isaiah the Hero Foundation creates programs and experiences that support, inspire, and empower youth and families within the community. We host community events, fundraisers, toy drives, and block parties that foster unity, provide resources, and create safe spaces for connection. Through youth-focused initiatives like the Inwood Hill Classics basketball league, we promote teamwork, discipline, mentorship, and positive leadership. Every effort we lead is rooted in integrity, service, and a commitment to building brighter futures by investing directly in our community.

Honoring Isaiah’s Life and Impact

The Inspiration Behind the Foundation

Isaiah Ché Moronta (2006–2020) was a young New Yorker born in Washington Heights and raised in Inwood. He attended PS/MS 278 for both elementary and middle school, where he was known as a bright and engaged student. Isaiah was a member of the school chess club, excelled in mathematics—his favorite subject—and was naturally athletic, with basketball as his favorite sport. Like many kids in his neighborhood, he spent much of his free time playing and connecting with friends at the local park.

On March 13, 2020, Isaiah was at Inwood Hill Park with a group of friends when tragedy struck. On a warm day, Isaiah jumped from a bridge into the Hudson River and safely returned to shore. Shortly after, his friend and classmate, Manny Flores, attempted the same jump. Manny was not a strong swimmer and began struggling in the water, calling out for help. Without hesitation, Isaiah attempted to rescue his friend.

Both Isaiah and Manny tragically lost their lives that day at just thirteen years old. Their bodies were recovered weeks later, leaving a profound and lasting impact on their families, friends, and the entire community.

Isaiah’s selflessness, courage, and integrity continue to inspire those who knew him and those who have learned his story. In his honor, the Isaiah the Hero Foundation was created to carry forward his legacy by uplifting youth and strengthening communities through service, mentorship, and opportunity. The foundation is proudly run by Isaiah’s father, ensuring that his son’s spirit and values live on through meaningful action and community impact.
